you should try s&s bbq in south hill, va.

  2. I am a certified bbq judge having been one for over 10 years. I have visited almost all of the joints on your list, with a little different take on some of them. A few of the places you want to visit are no longer in business, like Mitchell’s in Wilson, Bob Melton’s and Scott’s in Goldsboro.

A few of my favorites that you have not visited are Alston Bridges, The BBQ Center, Speedy’s, Ken’s Grill & Wilber’s, which is probably the best total package of the group. That means bbq, slaw, hushpuppies and service. They are all very good. Since enjoying bbq is totally subjective, a few of the ones you enjoy are not at the top of my list. They are specifically Log Cabin, Whispering Pines & Allen & Son. To each his own.

We have a group that travels across primarily NC but also parts of SC in search of the best of the best. At this time Skylight Inn in Ayden is the consensus #1 joint for BBQ, nothing else, not the slaw or the cornbread just the bbq. It is the best.

Continued good wishes as you continue your bbq journey.

George, Thanks for your comments. One thing I am not doing is reviewing the restaurants. The ones that are my favorites are listed on “Jim’s List.” I am a chef and restaurateur and I respect that these folks are in business and I don’t want to ever hurt anyone’s business. I am merely giving comments on each restaurant and listing my favorites on “Jim’s List.” The one’s you mentioned as your favorites I will eventually get to. I have eaten at BBQ Center, but before I began my Pig Pen Trails. And I agree about Skylight as being the best I have had so far, in the East. Lexington #1 is my favorite so far, but because of how I order it – coarse chopped, brown. Keep in touch and let me know of any other noteworthy restaurants you enjoy – like the section on “Carolina Road Cuisine” – sincerely, Jim Noble

  3. We started serving from our Pit on June 1st, 2009. We are located in the Lake Wylie Plaza, just across the Buster Boyd Bridge on Hwy 49. We began our journey in BBQ on the competion trail. It has been a very interesting and succesful trip. We would welcome your opinon on our selections of food.
    We are close to downtown.
